Carnegie Mellon Suit Against Uber Focuses on “Hexclusters”
May 31, 2026
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has sued Uber (Uber Freight, other subsidiaries) (1:26-cv-00598). The District of Delaware complaint targets the use of certain technologies for determining localized demand for its services, where urban areas are broken down into “H3 hexagons” that are algorithmically clustered into “hexclusters” based on activity and location data of customers using Uber apps and services. Exemplary uses of such hexclusters include “determining driver incentives on the Uber app and determining a restaurant delivery area for Uber Eats”.
